Why Native North American Plants?

There are a host of reasons to plant native North American plants, but chief among them are beauty, adaptability, ecological value for wildlife, and their low maintenance when sited properly. Our region is brimming with gorgeous native wildflowers that have co-evolved with numerous native insects and animals that often rely on them for their primary needs. If there is one place where we as individuals and families can make a difference, it is for these insects and birds and animals by simply planting native plants, by creating habitat that will help slow or potentially even arrest the decline of their populations. It may seem a small difference on the scale of one home garden, but as more of us begin to plant natives, the effects begin to become much larger.

We have seen vast changes in our own garden as a result of the installation of native plants, attracting a more diverse set of insects and birds every year. And what a display they put on, from showy Wild Bergamot and Purple Coneflowers to more subtle but beautiful plants like Pearly Everlasting and Golden Alexander. And there really is a great native plant for every conceivable site in terms of sunlight and soil moisture needs.

Truly though, when you plant natives, you make an impact. Even if it seems small to us, it's not small to the native plant and animal communities that are affected. It creates beneficial ripples in the local ecosystem that spread outward, creating new opportunities for foraging and habitat. And who knows, down the line, seeds from your garden or meadow may spread and become essential to the adaptation, evolution and, not just survival, but thriving of these native species.
